autumn layers

fall is finally here and being back in my home town of Portland makes it so much more exciting.  the leaves have become a fiery rainbow on the trees and now falling all around me, layering the slick ground.  the air is moist and the smell of fall creeps in from the wet forest and rises off the black pavement.  fashion wise, its time to start layering up the clothes as well.  my favorite way to wear fashion is possible for me again after so many years in the deserts of the south and the rainforests of the east.  i love pairing flannels and denim with lace and florals for a grungy northwest feel and layering monochromatic sweats and chunky knits for a put-together yet comfy sporty vibe, textures and lengths being the key components of the successful layer-up.

magick

it is a part of us all and it becomes ever so present as we approach All Hallows Eve followed directly by Dia De Los Muertos.  it is said that during this time of year, the veil between the living and the spirits of the dead becomes thinner.  it is believed that for one day a year the spirits of the dead can walk upon the living, the catholic holiday known as All Hallows Eve on October 31st which traces back to pagan and celtic roots marking the beginning of the 'darker half' of the year.  for me, it has become a celebration of all spiritual forces, within every being, tree, mountain...or lurking in the shadows.

her moose originally caught my eye with the lovely long drawn and lingering antler strokes.  couldn't resist the eloquence of the rest of this sequence. feels like wild fall in the softest way possible.

the badlands

driving through South Dakota has its perks.  the Badlands National Park offered an afternoon exploration of a naturally created fractal city.  500,000 years ago, when the glaciers began to melt at the end of the last Ice Age, new streams began to move across the area, cutting through the rock layers over time.  now this breathtaking wall of seemingly painted geometric shapes divides the upper prairie from the lower.  i imagine the Sioux Indian tribes scouting the grassland from their perch on the wall, locating the herds and getting a head up on their enemies.  this is their land.  the Sioux crossed through a pass of the Badlands on their way to the Wounded Knee Massacre.  i bow my head to them.
